Butyrate

Our gut microbiota is capable of producing, through the fermentation of undigested dietary fibers, three short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs): propionate, acetate, and butyrate.

The production of these metabolites, which result from bacterial digestion, is distributed as follows: 15% butyrate, 25% propionate, and 60% acetate.

Butyrate is the least produced SCFA, yet it plays essential roles in maintaining good intestinal health, making supplementation potentially necessary.

Butyrate is therefore a postbiotic metabolized in the colon. A postbiotic is a preparation of inactivated microorganisms and/or their components that provides a health benefit to the host. These “components” include different elements of the microorganism, such as metabolites—substances produced (as in the case of butyrate) or used by the microorganism during its metabolic processes.
