Eschscholtzia is more commonly known as California poppy or American poppy, as it originates from that region.

From the Papaveraceae family, this plant is rich in alkaloids, particularly californidines.

Native Americans used both the sap and the leaves of eschscholtzia. The leaves were even consumed as vegetables.

This plant was introduced to Europe in the 19th century as an ornamental plant.

The scientific name Eschscholtzia was given in honor of a Baltic physician, botanist, and naturalist, Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz.
