Description

Fumitory, native to Europe, temperate Asia, and North Africa, is an herbaceous plant.

It is more commonly called earth smoke, earth bile, jaundice herb, earth flower, or widow’s herb.

Its name comes from the fact that fumitory juice is said to make one cry like smoke. In addition, its grayish, finely divided leaves resemble smoke rising from the ground.

It has been used since Antiquity and was even prescribed by Galen and Pliny.

Fumitory is rich in alkaloids, including protopine.
