Lycopène

A red fat-soluble pigment, lycopene gives its color to the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), a fruit-vegetable from which it gets its name.

Its presence in other red fruits, such as watermelon, grapefruit, or papaya, also gives them their reddish coloration.

This nutrient is synthesized exclusively by plants, fungi, and microorganisms.

In plants, it takes part in the process of photosynthesis along with other carotenoids.

Lycopene helps protect photosynthetic organisms—particularly chlorophyll molecules—from excessive damage caused by light- and oxygen-induced oxidation.

Lycopene belongs to the family of roughly 600 carotenoids and is the most abundant one in the human body.
